Join us for a discussion on suicide with UTA’s Dr. Baiden!

I need to thank you for George today we’re overly Facebook buff up and two minutes [Music] you’re putting the title into our Facebook live talk about suicide it is hot outside it is all eras reading somewhere somebody hurts I always wondered what if the temperature felt like in the Middle East and it’s the same it’s exactly the same so super hot man look forward I think it’s supposed to cool down next week here allegedly jerk John is not with us today she is in Colorado she might show up okay being

ready to go to my show up during that pleasure lag with Brandee awesome ah I’m brandy Austin and I’m here today with dr. Phillip Aden I mean dr. Phillip Aden is an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Arlington school social work which is just ten minutes north of here we wanted to bring him in and have a discussion on suicide there’s been a couple suicides celebrities recently and I know my facebook page I’ve had people that I know where they connected with commit suicide I would

say a little bit of an increasing level over the past couple of years and it’s hard to understand why people do it you know where they are coming from what you can do and if you are the person feeling suicidal what resources and and what’s out there for you so we wanted to bring you in and kind of have a discussion so we need to understand that these are not isolated incidents just celebrity suicides that’s not isolated is liveries right so why don’t you tell everyone a little bit about what you do

and then we’ll kind of get into a discussion of the different cars yeah thank you very much it’s a great opportunity to be here this afternoon to have this conversation topic she rightly said my research focus mostly on adverse childhood experiences and how that influenced health and mental illness and one of the mental abilities that our focus recently on has to do with suicide behaviors my PhD dissertation was on non-suicidal self-injury or what we typically call Soha so like correct yes correct that’s

often typically how some individuals particularly adolescent a young adult they start gradually getting used to the movement more serious like that’s what I typically do I also done some work looking at what’s happening among those who experience various forms of treatment and sexual abuse when it is close how does that influence their suicidal behavior does that help or does that exacerbates oh okay well then you have a lot of knowledge to help us kind of understand a little better about what’s

going on okay so I know a lot of people were in shock when they heard that Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain committed suicide on the outside it appears they have it all and they have a successful career and they have family or friends of money so money’s not an issue what statistically are the types of people affected by suicidal thoughts well thank you you might be right that recent incidents of suicide has woken the nation to result in additional votes they’re run by incidents of suicide we do recall a recent leader in

our case pin and Anthony Bourdain and what comes to people’s mind has to do with that how could this be that these are celebrities they are famously our worldview and if we’re talking about social support and connectedness you may imagine that wherever they go there were pockets that’s what’s deep so let’s start drinking a lot of individuals since they’re especially when I’m to report incident happened I have caused complaining that is this real output is P so this goes to

terrorist acts when we looking at the phenomenon suicide we could tell that it is when we got a lot of the risk factors its affects the rose even though some individuals have a higher than this again a tree so and can you see start our behaviors and others but once we witness in the week in the recent we tells us that excuse is a phenomena that goes beyond what the average person usually think that oh it is those who are poor those who unless connected those who do not have any body so it’s once again my sense that when we

look must you say we need to collect mention that it’s perhaps those who we do not expect to engage or missus eyeshadows that actually so direct and that’s you and necessary to do so in can be affected by suicidal thoughts or being a situation where they begin to feel suicidal it’s not limited to any person so you know you have to look out for everyone absolutely male or female that can be anyone rich for anyone so who is likely to attempt suicide yes so when we look at that she’sa rectum they

are number of sins that will be to identify and this will help us a lot in life in knowing who is at risk or who is more likely to commit or to engage in suicide and one of the main risk factors that we know for suicide attempts has to do with suicidal ideation that is feeling suicidal those who feel that nothing is going well for their behavior and thinking about their thinking about killing themselves isn’t just day dreaming dreaming of always one mixer side it’s preoccupied with thoughts of

killing yourself and what we do know is that those who engage in that often they go on to formulate a plan and then the acronyms and when we looking at since irradiation leading to Sister Act and what we do know based on the scientific literature has to be the fact that in terms of gender differences we do know that females often my ideas more than half the consistently engage in thoughts of suicide attempts more than males however when in her to actual suicide except we see more equal success but we

see suicide as higher among males than females there are a number of reasons that have been attributed to why this to deal with the facts Bill’s plan very well and in Essex so far it’s on fire by Souza it’s more prevalent among males and females where are three mils and two engaging they’re poisoning or overdose self-medicate or suffocation so those are some other things that accounts for the first one the terror attacks but I also want to point out that when we look at suicidal

ideation as a strong predictor of societies completely suicide one of the other responses that we need to pay attention to have to do with depression and anxiety which are the key drivers of suicidal behaviour so depression and anxiety we can also think of individuals who are having difficulty sleeping we can think of substance use particularly Halloween is a huge risk factor for alcoholics there are number of systematic reviews done showing that when you look at individuals who committed suicide a significant number

of them have had alcohol 12 12 to 18 hour sprites prior to the season attack so this brings up a good question that’s a good question the literature shows that individuals who consistently abuse alcohol they use alcohol as a coping mechanism to deal with depression trauma or past history of abuse they continue to engage in that and when it comes to since I attended like there’s no other way and engaging assessing alcohol use and we know that excessive alcohol use affects the functioning of the brain how

the brain operates and when it’s time to making some judgment of some decisions it is their decision and that potentially could lead to more severe behaviors so what warning signs should you look for in someone because I know that there were a lot of people close to the celebrities that passed away they said we didn’t know anything was wrong until it just happens because it’s the one Anthony Bourdain they just it just happened so what can we look for in other people and we’ll talk a little bit

later about how we can help so what can we look for yes so this one we looking at the warning signs of suicide so that is that’s the richer shows that we need to pay attention to one has to do with loneliness that we need to watch for those who feel that they are betting on addicts they all of a sudden are talking about the fact that life is no longer worth living or I guess those who feel lonely it’s also something that we need to work for those who consistently encouraging thoughts about life not

worth living or those who do not get enough saved those are warning signs and when we look especially illuminates one big thing that individuals who in certain positions should not be learning but we do know for instance in North America that one in four individuals are mean in spite of the social media all the supports that one we think about so what strike as researchers especially men will even though individuals may have a product sell of social network that it had wrong it’s very important that we

have somebody that we can confine we have somebody that we can actually go to when something happened it could be your wife your husband your partner or it could be somebody that you have a trusted relationship with that you can confirm that person so that person knows that this is what you went through it was increased those people out there but most of the people really yeah there’s no actual connection yes so it may appear on the outside if you have someone and then when you really are feeling down you don’t

yes certainly social media has its minuses connects people but beyond that it’s when you come to have enough confidence somebody that you can confide it you can have intimate personal conversation with somebody that you can call at midnight or 2:00 a.m. and the person say yes what you let’s stop not that oh can you call the funny money those are very important and you less likely to find that in social media that other there are more all the lines and all the followings but it’s very most

important that we pay attention to that and when it comes to celebrities or high-profile individuals this will be ignored because one like if somebody has over a hundred thousand followers or it was connected there is no interesting but perhaps that is somebody who actually needs that level of connection more so for those who it’s also important that we reach out and we also we say that those those officials to make sure the effort to reach out but what depresses something does is that it clouds your

mind or judgment that makes it difficult for you to see the native Richa so when individuals who support network they have them call occasionally to check on their projects or they can just have conversation that will make people feel belong who have fulfilled that is purpose for living and so people that are lonely and I guess many people that are sad or maybe a difference happen to them recently depression is there anything else we can look for and our colleagues or friends that may be a sign or symptom something

worse that could come well if somebody has had an ideation before it’s a major red flags that’s really to welcome that and we need to be in touch with people we need to repair them for counseling and for mental health services one other thing that we also have to do better is that to take away the stigma as a signal seeking because you don’t know what they are calling your friend or a new acquaintance is committed to is that whoever thought about because they’re not going to just yeah yeah it’s it’s

something that unless you again this comes to yeah unless you have that level of close intimate or personal relationship with somebody knows when some of those but if you do not it can be very difficult to get out there to get some of this information and just because you don’t have that close relationship initially it with someone and you feel like they may be lonely or sad that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t reach out for a community you can be the one that helps they just need someone to feel

connected to and you only feel connected to somebody if you reach out you have to start somewhere so so I know that if I see someone that appears to be lonely maybe sad or if I know them personally has had these thoughts before what should I do if I feel like they’re going to a bad place again well you could refer person for counselling and as I was talking previously that seeking consolation be seen us know what we do when you feel safe able to see your general practitioner the same we should

be able to sit for mental health services we should support psychological services and take away the stigma that is associated with medical because especially in certain communities minorities black Hispanic community there is a whole lot of stigma associated seeking mental services that individuals are going through serious traumatic experiences or they feel depressed if low stress but they for some reason no.16 services because they will perceive as being weak or not be strong enough and we need to do

our close that we can all encourage those who are going to life challenges to sit there and therapist can offer guidance through the life challenges so if if someone close to you passes away or maybe you have a financial setback and your business your job oh not everyone has the ability to much or cope figure out what to do next but a therapist can help you kind of get through the hurt and anger to get to the next step correct yes there are person dimensions that starkest can provide that we tried and tested to

help individuals who haven’t you signed up before also those interventions have been known to be successful and and I think that I would like to stress us to do with physical activity exercise is one great thing therapy or prevention activity that is known to buffer the effects of meaning health and mental health outcomes including society interests because in the close who messes as frequently they live well we take out all the stress and order what other life challenges and depression that they may be going through so

exercise it’s one thing that shishun where they were feeling suicidal maybe writing them when I walk to the park or something like that and talking as you’re doing the physical activity you know it takes like 30 minutes a day or something right exercise when we look at their social supports time into physical activity of walking it can be very difficult sometimes to want to get yourself as an individual to go to the gym or to make it some physical activity but when you have a class then we have a

buggy that’s useful source or some accountability to that time also many times you to get up when you go through like getting out and it can mix you get out door and do something that would take your minds away from all the challenges or the thoughts that are clouding your mind we miss useful very fresh because beyond feeling okay me we can see that social support or those who have somebody can talk to them too it’s very helpful because in English who are having difficulty quitting smoking so

when we have Indigo’s who feel very depressed and suicidal an activity may be something that they may do because what we can tell also those who are Finnish exciti something that we often see is they withdraw from what they normally do all of a sudden 10 stones in TransAm again if somebody is known to like soccer or you somebody that song so activity regularly to keep you myself going and it may be okay to occasionally checking just to final houses are ruining because there will be something

going that’s one we know we are aware of so when you see those into those withdrawing from what they are very passionate about all of a sudden then cases knowing that it is good to have this conversation again coming back to if you have a confident or if you have a close relationship with somebody this is when you get to know some more business beyond that and even if you don’t have a close relationship reach out sometimes they just need to feel like someone sees them yes so I wanted to do this share

today because suicide and suicidal thoughts affect the legal industry and we’ll talk about some of the other issues but they affect the legal industry tremendously in fact rates of depression among lawyers is actually three and a half times higher than the national average the percentage of attorney is with suicidal thoughts is nearly three times higher than the national average and one fifth of attorneys have a drinking problem and demonstrate some symptoms of anxiety output in the comments in Texas there is

a place you can turn to for help it’s not related to that Texas State Water ethical committee so you can feel free and comfortable reaching out but this is common in high-stress professions correct absolutely and this is what sometimes people have difficulty understanding that why will somebody why wouldn’t I come here lawyer professor why would investment all of a sudden commune suicide it sometimes people don’t see that that’s all why would somebody be thinking that life is not

worth living if you are that I prefer but the reality is that those professions are hide money they come with a lot of stress that and we you know that stress as a strong link with seaside our behavior so professors graduate students and lawyers investment bankers they as a significant rates of suicide are committing suicidal behavior so it’s something that the Germans know and those in those professions also should know and so walking to seek counseling and mental health services absolutely you know I can’t speak to

other professions but in the legal profession and people come to us when they’re having a problem and we help them fix problems a lot of times or get a recovery for a new injury or something but very rarely do people go to an attorney for fun so we are constantly affected with deadlines and the stress of our clients and a lot of attorneys came into the profession to help people it’s just a lot of when you first started I wasn’t aware myself of how strenuous it can be but there’s there’s

a lot of people a lot of clients and they all have serious life-changing issues that are occurring in their life and you take on the responsibility of helping them to death it’s not just one person you know it’s a lot so there aren’t a lot of resources and there’s not a lot of talking about the stress Warriors have especially when you’re new in the professions but there is a place to go for helping with that information in there ok so what could you been found or what have you found to be helpful for

someone who is suicidal so if someone out there is having thoughts and maybe they don’t have someone to reach out to where they don’t know that they have something to reach out what has helped people like that yeah what is calling your practitioner or if you don’t call your general practitioner calling a 9-1-1 call it a seaside walk line those you could be referred for appropriate services as I said a number of intervention cognitive behavioral therapy as one of its many convention that is known to help those who I feel

finish excited we have mindfulness and diuretic therapy all known to be very powerful so those who are feeling suicidal when they reach their occupation services they could be connected to a therapist who work with them it’s also very important that’s really because who I hire high-stress profession take time to have self-care it’s very important that you in a helping profession helping others we sometimes forget that we also need to have self before we can talk back so we take on an additional burden and then

comes a time that we need to pause we need to slow down have a self-care have an introspection before we carry I do track to consistently remind other people here that it is my stress and you do have to kind of have a balance in our life especially if there’s a high-stress environment a balance will help kind of even things that will give me down time because you can’t consistently upgrade at a high level for a long period of time to catch up with you it will well so what helps people that are suicidal

beginning to feel like life is livable again in a study that we did recently trying to understand those who have attempted suicide before we wanted to see what is helping them track we realized that those individuals who are trying to happy free from mental illness they also married living with somebody they will also products they attend religious services occasionally with the idea that they’ve connected to a community for among the Christian before that whatever challenges are probably going through it

will face off so there’s a purpose for living and we also found that they had no history of childhood adversity so discuss sexual abuse neglect and growing up in a poverty-stricken neighborhood these things are going to be very powerful in terms of helping the tribe in those having attacks aside are interesting so it’s really about connection because you mentioned during your church or having a spouse or or something which is awesome thing that involves another person that allows you to share absolutely so the first step is

probably to find someone yes it’s important to do that but as a puppy so they love okay one last thing I heard a lot of people say it is so selfish of that person to commit suicide and I wanted to address that’s not how the other person feels they is that they feel like they’re a burden and that whomever they’re around or their family whoever cares for them or is with them will be relieved of the burden if they’re no longer here correct absolutely that’s that’s their rights

that ending those who are finished inside out one of the science is that the decision supposed to be a burden on us so they have the idea that if I take my life then others will be free so it is not the other way around and it’s one of the strongest indication when people for that they are a burden on others it’s very concerning that we all depend on each other we have some different ability on each other for so far in an active life but when you get to a point where you know somebody so keep an eye

out for people that are lonely people that feel like they’re a burden in don’t make comments yes yes not everyone but you hear little comments yes you generally hear its signals as to what somebody’s going through or somebody’s engaging in certain behaviors as a result of things that may have happened so you do hear some of you read a comment or I guess that suggests that this is it but there are some individuals who also because they keep a lot of sense to themselves they don’t

reach out they have oh and not within answer and those kind of those who typically have had a lot of trauma leave a lot of abuse that they internalize the views and all the stress that comes from that use the information like that it only reach out they don’t you don’t tell people they are planners or whatever into and all of a sudden the end agencies like so they are something it goes like that by you typically see warning signs that this is what somebody’s going through there’s

somebody for the second person since that’s the person used to be very passionate about so those one signs we need to pay careful attention today postpartum depression doesn’t mean kids there’s a misconception because of Susan Smith back and I think she drove off the bridge I think and sent her car after raising her two children died and then women think well they’re not they don’t suffer from postpartum depression because they don’t want to kill their kids they love their kids but they are

affected and it’s important in their the some of that can be just temporary and a simple call to your doctor can you help that right yes the most part of depression you see a lot of people in really bad spaces and not necessarily because they’re lonely it’s so it’s something that doctors are screaming for regularly and when they see signs they’re able to help if in some instances that those signs they don’t think those signs it should be seen as something that it’s gonna it face out and again we’re going

through that you have to know that this is so just pick up the phone and call your doctor and it’s something that they’re drained and completely understand it can address so okay so if you feel like someone’s going to commit suicide right away call 9-1-1 they always call the general practitioner and mcdonald counselor connect the person to mental health services you can go to the ER at the hospital right yes you can also call the National Suicide Prevention lifeline eight hundred two seven three eight two

five five and we’ll put that the comments in you can google it I believe they have a website you can text them you can call them whenever you need to do but you can also just reach out to someone if you feel like they’re sad jump to them if you’re sad you can reach out to someone who seems kind and it can there are a lot of people out there that do take the time I know that in the news it feels like everyone’s angry at each other but there are a lot of people out there who do want to help and they do

want to listen so you are not alone you can call plethora of people dr. nyle online the suicide prevention line you can call a friend and then getting aware you know maybe even the clerk at the grocery store who is friendly to you right it doesn’t have to be anybody specific just somebody yes yes so thank you for joining us if people have more questions and we’re looking to you your research further how can they find that yes okay excellent thank you so much for joining us today I’m brandy Austin and
